Ukelele Solo!!!!

Here is something for all of you ukelele enthusiasts on the board...

My parents went to Hawaii and brought me home a ukelele and a cd by this guy. His name is Jake Shimabukuro. This song may be familiar to some of you.

Real Country

I know that there are a lot of people out there who say "I like real country music, not that fake ultra pop country crap they play on CMT." I am one of those people... Sort of... See, I don't like everything Willie Nelson has ever recorded. I don't have a stockpile of Johnny Cash records in my basement. But, this song by Lyle Lovett is a beautiful example of what I like about country music. It's called "If I Had A Boat".

Monty Python: Counter Point

I know quite a few of you out there are staunch Kids In The Hall fans. This is just a counterpoint.

Axl Attacks

Hey there.... Ok, so, I was originally gonna post some Axl Rose clips. But there are just too many good ones, so, I will just tell you that you should all go on youtube and search for "Axl Attacks" "Axl gets pissed" or something to that affect, and you will not be disappointed. One thing I can tell you, he's not afraid to stop a song on behalf of chewing somebody out.

Instead, first, here is a clip of Kurt Cobain getting lit in the face, after escaping a crowd surfing incident gone bad. The guy who punches him actually looks like the Security guard too. If anybody can tell me what that guy was thinking, I would sure like to know....

Next, we have a quick clip of Keith Richards taking his guitar off, and whipping it at some guy who comes running up from the left. Meanwhile, Mick Jagger is still singing with a U.K. flag wrapped around his body like some sort of makeshift bathrobe....

Here is a little taste of Axl...

The first video is labeled "Axl is Fuckin' Possessed", and rightfully so. Most notably at about the 1:00 mark. He doesn't yell at anybody in this one though...

Finally, one last Axl vid. Apparently this incident caused riots...

Let it Ride, Everybody Here Wants You,

First off, Ryan Adams. Definately one of the more prolific songwriters around. Not everything he does is gold, but he is, nonetheless, one of my favorite songwriters. The entire Love is Hell album is perfect in my eyes. This song is from one of my other favorites, Cold Roses.

I'm not sure what happened with that last video. Anyway, this is another Jeff Buckley song I just fell in love with. As I said, he was currently in the process of recording his second album when he died. The band members and producer completed the instrumentation after Mr. Buckleys death, without his feedback, so who knows if this is exactly how he envisioned this particular song. Regardless, I love it. Unfortunately the video isn't enabled for embedding, so just follow the link:

Jeff Buckley - Grace

This guy is an incredibly talented songwriter, musician, and vocalist who died before he even scratched the surface of his potential. He was working on his second album, awaiting the arrival of his bandmates in Memphis to finish the sessions. He went for a swim one evening in the Wolf river and drowned. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system. It is presumed that he was swept away from shore by the current.

Also, I think it would behoove you all to take a look at this music blog:

Take Five - The Fun Version

I heard this song on the radio the other day and loved it. It's an old Jazz standard. There are many superior versions of this on YouTube, and if you like the tune, check 'em out. This version, however, features a wierdo on the Piano.

Imogen Heap - Headlock

A girl I worked with gave me the album, and this is the first song. It blew me away. A lot of the album is a tad too "Chick Rock" for me, but it has its gems. There is a song called Hide and Seek that is %100 vocals, and it's beautiful. Her voice is really angelic.

Iron and Wine - Boy With a Coin

Those of you who know me and have spent any amount of time with me in the last couple of months saw this coming (and the Andrew Bird, for that matter). This is another example of a song that hits me really, really hard.

The acoustic guitar part is crisp, and moving, with a sweet accompanying bass line. The vocals are ethereal, dreamy, but hinting at sorrow or yearning. Then there are the hand drums and claps. I'm not sure if I would like this song nearly as much if it were played on a kit. Without any drums at all it wouldn't have nearly as much drive. The sustaining electric guitars and backwards violin (or whatever the heck that is) are a good compliment to the dreamy vocal harmonies.

If anybody likes this song enough to analyze the lyrics, I'm interested in other peoples interpretations.

Again, I hope you all like this at least a little bit

Andrew Bird - Imitosis

I recently discovered Andrew Bird. There are only a handful of bands, or songwriters that can coax me to buy an album after hearing only one song. But after hearing the song "Heretics", I was completely sold. The entire album, Armchair Apocrypha has been pretty well revolved in my car stereo since I bought it, and I don't plan on taking it out anytime soon. I know that different things hit different people, so I don't expect everyone to react to this like I did. This just gives you a good idea of what moves me, and therefore, a little peek into the window of my soul. I hope you all enjoy it at least a little.

Oh yeah, I looked up "Imitosis" and there was no definition, but I imagine it is the reversal or opposite of the process of Mitosis (ala "mature" vs. "immature").

mitosis– noun Cell Biology. the usual method of cell division, characterized typically by the resolving of the chromatin of the nucleus into a threadlike form, which condenses into chromosomes, each of which separates longitudinally into two parts, one part of each chromosome being retained in each of two new cells resulting from the original cell.

Last Stop: This Town

The first time I saw this video, I was cracking up. The little carrot singing the deep, lispy voice gets me every time. This is not my favorite Eels song (see "Your Lucky Day In Hell"). But it is a damn good song, and a damn good video... in my humble opinion.

Working Day And Night

This is a song from the Off the Wall album. I believe it was his first solo album. It's hard to pick a favorite Michael Jackson song, but this may be one of my favorite of his lesser known stuff. Unfortunately, there is no actual video for the song, but this has tons of good footage from some of his other videos. Whoever did this did a hell of a job syncing things up. Check those moves.
